Summer Jewellery Care
By Anna Perkins As we flip the calendar months into June, one thing becomes abundantly clear –summer is finally here. It is time to pack away the winter clothes in favour for brighter, lighter clothing options. It is time to start planning barbecues, trips to the beach, and summervacations. Summertime is also the best time to show off those fab new jewellery accessories youhave.
Jewellery shines and shimmers the best in the summer sun; there is no doubt about that! A name necklace with your new maxi dress or friendship bracelet to go with a hip new bikini – it all works! But, if you are going to pair your outfits off with personalised jewellery, it is best to know how to properly take care of your jewellery. Proper care guarantees that your jewellery will always look good and sparkles.
Before the summer even starts up, have your jewellery items thoroughly looked at by a professional jeweller. They will not only clean the metal, but also check all settings for crystals and gemstones, as well as check the clasps on all your jewellery pieces. This will ensure your jewellery is strong, crystals and gemstones will not fall out of the setting, and the clasp will never come undone while you are hiking or doing any other fun sporting activity.
One of the worst things anyone can do while wearing jewellery is go into a pool, hot tub, or sea/ocean. The chemicals in pools and hot tubs, especially chlorine, can damage your jewellery. These chemicals can discolour and tarnish metals and remove the finish off of crystals and gemstones. The salt found in large bodies of water can also erode jewellery and cause it to tarnish quickly.
If you are going to be applying sunblock, bug spray, tanning oil, or any other lotion or oil, take your jewellery off first. These items can make jewellery look dull and dingy, breaking down the metal finish and causing the items to tarnish. Furthermore, these often-used summer essentials can get inside prongs and settings, eventually causing crystals and gemstones to come loose and fall out.
At the end of the day, take off your jewellery and wipe it down properly using a soft cloth and warm water. The oils and sweat your body accumulates during the day can tarnish metal and dull its shine.
