MYKA & SUSTAINABILITY
At MYKA, we’ve been continually working on improving our sustainability
performance by being conscious of selecting eco-friendly materials, using recycled paper, and packaging
and embracing sustainable production processes that are safe for employees, communities, and
consumers.
As an active player in the global Jewelry market, we are obliged to
sustainability and the actions needed to improve our energy management, to operate a dynamic supply
chain, to promote sustainable consumption, and protect our earth’s natural resources.
SUTAINABLE MANUFACTURING DOES NOT HAPPEN OVERNIGHT
Sustainable manufacturing, also referred to as green manufacturing or
eco-friendly manufacturing, is defined by The United States’ Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as
“the creation of manufactured products through economically sound processes that minimize negative
environmental impacts while conserving energy and natural resources”. Sustainable manufacturing should also increase safety for employees, local communities, and of course, the product itself.
While jewelry makes the ultimate luxury gift –how can we be sure it is also
an ethical choice? Climate change, decreasing natural resources and increasing demand on the world’s
energy supplies: As we face the irreversible changes in our planet’s system, the threat of climate
change is simply impossible to ignore. Businesses today are putting a lot of effort to minimize their
negative environmental impacts and while the road to solving climate change isn’t easy, at MYKA we focus
on the process itself.
SUSTAINABILITY IN JEWELRY MAKING
While sustainability in the fashion industry is dealing mostly with supply
chain concerns and overconsumption, the jewelry industry is dealing with yet another element – mining.
Precious metals can be recycled.
Silver and gold can be easily melted and reformed into a new piece of
jewelry but when it comes to buying mined diamonds, the picture darkens as behind the shine there are
many human and environmental concerns.
Mining can be a brutal business: It destroys a vast area of land, pollutes waterways and
creates a devastating impact on wildlife. Taking place mostly in poorer countries that strive for money,
mining makes the battle for resources violent and harmful.
Years ago, the mined diamond industry came under scrutiny with unethical production
practices and even though these unethical practices have been significantly reduced, when buying mined
diamonds,it is difficult to ensure they are sourced ethically.
For that reason, lab-grown diamonds have become the best option for ethically sourced gems. in the last
years, consumers are moving away from conventional diamonds, with nearly 70% of millennials considering
buying a lab grown alternative. So, what are these lab-diamonds and how do they make the best ethical
options?
LAB GROWN DIAMONDS – A GUILT FREE GEM
Lab-grown diamonds are produced using heat and pressure (much
like their mined counterparts). However,
instead of mining and abusing the planet's resources, these diamonds are created using machines and
advanced technology that replicates the natural diamond growing process. And the result? man-made
diamond that has the same chemical and physical properties of a mined diamond and are significantly
less detrimental to the environment as it takes much less energy to grow a diamond in a lab.
LAB DIAMOND COLLECTION
At MYKA, all of our diamond jewelry is made of ethical lab diamonds. With
lab diamonds you can find reassurance in knowing the exact origin of your diamond and be ensured that
